Northland Pines stays in hunt for GNC title

As Monday night's game between visiting Northland Pines and host Point-Rapids approached, each of the teams had something to prove.

In their last match-up in Eagle River one month ago, the Red Panthers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 34 minutes of play and appeared poised to upset the Eagles in 'The Dome.'

The home team came out with a jump in their step, scoring three goals in the first five minutes of the final period and hung on for a 5-4 comeback win.

The Red Panthers wanted to prove the outcome of that game was a fluke, while Pines wanted to affirm the opposite.

Wisconsin Prep Hockey's Game of the Week was never in question, as Pines put the game into 'run-time' early in the third period and coasted to a 7-1 victory over the Red Panthers at the South Wood County Rec Center on Parents' Night.

The first three goals for Pines were of the special team variety, but Point-Rapids had the first quality chance.

Two minutes in, Sarah Peplinski got free on a breakaway, only to be stymied by Pines freshman netminder Jenna Paez.

Pines got on the board at 6:54 with a rebound power play goal by Cali Sanborn--her first of three goals--with an assist from Sydney Moustakis.

A few minutes later, the Eagles were killing a penalty and found themselves with the puck in the Red Panthers' d-zone. Kali Ebert took a swing at the puck in the slot and connected and saw it bounce high into the air off a defender and end up in the net behind Red Panther goalie Emily Bubla for the shorty at 11:16. Paige Healy earned her first of three helpers on the play.

The guests walked off after the period leading 2-0 and outshooting the hosts by a margin of 8-2.

Pines converted on another power play early in the second to extend the lead to 3-0. Sanborn found a loose puck and banged it in for the rebound goal at 2:05. Healy was credited with the assist.

Four minutes later, Sanborn grabbed a turnover in the neutral zone and motored in unchecked, made a deke and flipped the puck over Bubla's left shoulder to give the guests a four-goal lead.

Healy scored her first goal when she punched in a rebound at 11:34, with an assist to Jessie Wilkins to make it 5-0.

With just over a minute left, Rachel McNamara and Katrina Hassig went in on a 2-on-1, but R-Mac's shot clanked off Paez's mask to keep the home team off the scoreboard.

Shots were nine apiece in the period.

The Eagles put the game into run-time just under three minutes into the final stanza with a nice move by Healy. She grabbed a loose puck behind the cage, evaded a Red Panther defender, skated to the side of the net and sniped a tough-angle shot past Bubla's glove to increase the score to 6-0.

That score held for most of the quick period until Pines added their final tally at 13:01 with Claire Decker's goal, assisted by Healy.

Less than 30 seconds later, Kiana Coombs scored for the Red Panthers to account for the 7-1 final. Shots were 11-4 in favor of the visitors in the period.

Paez stopped 14 shots in the game for Pines, while Bubla made 21 saves for the Red Panthers.

Pines (13-9-1, 11-1-1 GNC) can clinch at least a share of the Great Northern crown Friday with a win against the Northern Edge in Rhinelander. Marshfield is also 11-1-1 and will travel to Medford on Friday.

The Red Panthers (9-11-2, 8-4-1 GNC) can earn a tie for third with a win over Tomahawk Thursday at K.B. Willett Arena, combined with an Edge loss to Pines.
