Red Panthers stay warm with 47 shots on net

On a night where it was -2 degrees Fahrenheit outside the Simek Rec Center, and perhaps +20 degrees inside, the Point-Rapids Red Panthers started fast and skated to a 4-1 victory over host Medford Friday night in Great Northern Conference play.

Taylor Grimm started the scoring when she reaped the benefits of her hard work, cashing in on a rebound past Medford über-goalie Tori Walsh at the 5:22 mark. Sarah Peplinski earned a helper on the play.

Just 24 seconds later, the visitors scored again, this time with help from a fortuitous bounce. Walsh made the initial save of a Rachel Metz shot, but the puck flipped high into the air over the senior netminder and behind her and landed in the goal for the second Red Panthers tally. Grimm got the assist on the score.

The period ended with the two-goal lead, and the guests holding a 17-6 shot edge.

More than 11 minutes were played in the middle period before the Red Panthers added to their lead.

Defenseman Rachel McNamara took off on a 3-on-2 rush and sniped the puck past Walsh from the mid slot area to give the visitors a 3-0 lead at 11:06.

Just over three minutes later, Metz got a 'hustle' goal and paid for it.

After a Walsh save, the puck was loose on the low left side. Metz pounced on it and banged it in just before she was leveled by a Medford defender. Grimm earned her second assist on the play at 14:42.

The Raiders were unable to take advantage of two power plays, but would find more success in the third period while on the man-advantage. Shots were 19-7 in favor of Point-Rapids.

After Kiana Coombs went off for body checking midway through the final period, Medford found that the third time was a charm, at least on a power play.

Marissa McPeak battled behind the Red Panther net for a loose puck and sent it out to the right circle, where Paige Bernklau grabbed it and whipped it  past goalie Emily Bubla, nicking off the webbing of the goalie's glove to cut the lead to 4-1 at the 8:00 mark.

The Red Panthers had another power play chance but did not capitalize, and the horn sounded on a three-goal Red Panthers win.

In the period, the guests once again held the shot edge, 11-7.

Bubla continued her stellar play in net for Point-Rapids, stopping 19 of 20 shots for the victory. Walsh was much busier, earning 43 saves on her end for Medford.
