Hayward-Spooner wins consolation game

USM 4, Arrowhead 0

The University School co-op girls’ hockey team defeated Arrowhead 4-0 to win the championship of the Pines Classic Tournament in Eagle River Saturday evening.

The Wildcats scored two goals in the second period and two more in the third period to help junior goaltender Jaime Hathaway add another shutout to her record.

"It was a great game and great to win this tournament.  We waited a long time to accomplish the task. No other USM co-op team has won this tournament.  I'm proud of this group of girls," said Jason Woods USM's head coach.

He continued, "We knew Arrowhead would give us their best. They always do.  We were able to put some pucks in the net and finish off a championship weekend."

The first period was scoreless.  USM finally broke the deadlock late in the second period on a power play. Senior Laine Tomesch got the puck at the Warhawks' blue line and like a fastball pitcher on the mound, she fired it toward the net.  The puck hit the stick of freshman Caitlin McBride who was parked like an armored car in front of Arrowhead's junior goalie Hannah Nicholson. The puck bounced to the stick of sophomore Nina Andersen who slammed the puck under the goalie at 11:31.

The Wildcats added another goal late in the first period.  Forechecking in the Arrowhead slot, McBride knocked the puck off an opposing player's stick.  It hopped to Andersen in the lower right circle.  She skated toward the crease and jammed the puck under the scrambling Nicholson at 15:57.

USM made it 3-0 at 1:37 of the third period.  Freshman defenseman Hannah Koniar stick-checked the puck away from the stick of an Arrowhead forward in the USM zone.  It jumped out of the zone as Arrowhead's defenseman were changing. Swooping to the loose puck like a hawk clawing a fish from a stream, USM senior Abby Leitschuh raced in on a breakaway.  From the slot, she rifled a shot over Nicholson's shoulder and ironically guillotined Arrowhead’s fortunes.

The Wildcats sealed the victory with an empty-net goal at 16:19. Sophomore Rose Revolinski won a battle for the puck along the boards in center ice.  She stepped past the Arrowhead player, and skated with it into the Warhawks zone.  From the top of the right circle, she fired it in.

The victory gave USM a 14-6 overall record.  The Wildcats hope to improve it and their Eastern Shores Conference record of 6-2 on Thursday when they play Beaver Dam in a conference contest in Beaver Dam at 7:00 p.m.

Hayward/Spooner 6, Northland Pines 4

Northland Pines scored first, but HASP scored more as the Hurricanes downed the host Eagles in the consolation Game of the Northland Pines Classic in Eagle River on Saturday.

Paige Healy drew first blood for the Eagles when she sniped the far top corner from the left faceoff circle to beat Hurricanes goalie Sarah Miley. Cheyenne Turnbull evened the score late in the first period with a shot through traffic that beat Pines netmeinder Jenna Paez.

Cheyenne gave the Hurricanes the lead early in the second period when she located a loose puck during a scrum in front of the Eagles goal, and poked it past sprawled out Paez. Aly Tremblay extended the lead three minutes later with a one-time slapshot from the left side on a Hurricanes power play. The score stayed at 3-1 for the rest of the period.

The third period was nothing like the first two as each team put three more pucks in the other's net. The Eagles drew within one goal at 5-4 late in the period, but Hayward got the last one to finish with a 6-4 victory.
