UPDATED WITH GAME STORY AND PICS

Two years ago in their magical run to state, the Marquette Hilltoppers were involved in 15 one-goal games, miraculously winning all of them. They were not quite as fortunate in Madison, however, losing 3-2 in two overtimes to Notre Dame on Quarterfinal Thursday.

Saturday in the Showdown in Titletown Showcase opener, the Hilltoppers stood on the precipice once more, but again prevailed against Ashwaubenon 3-2, as Pat Tighe scored with 69 seconds left for the game-winner.

Marquette got on the board first when Will Podewils grabbed a cross-ice pass from Griff Jeszka and sniped the puck past Jaguars goalie Ryan Wischow at the 11:57 mark. Bryan (BC) Carroll also earned a helper on the play.

With just over two minutes remaining, Max Benson just missed on the tying score as his shot from the left dot pinged off the left post and behind the net.  Marquette held a 9-4 shot edge in the period.

Podewils had another chance early in the second, but he couldn't get solid wood on a pass from Jeszka and the puck went wide of the net. The Jags had two power play opportuntites, but couldn't score and the period ended with Marquette holding (surprise, surprise) a one-goal lead and outshooting their opponents 12-7 in the stanza.

The Jags did take advantage of a Hilltopper penalty four minutes into the final period when James Block grabbed a rebound and put it past goalie Mike Roznik to tie the game at one. Matt Berkovitz earned an assist on the score at 4:45.

Thirty seconds later, Marquette's Oliver McBride snuck past the defenseman in the neutral zone, grabbed a lead feed but was denied by Wischow as the goalie slid over to his right to make a clutch save.

Ashwaubenon took the lead at 8:24 as Block scored his second goal on another power play chance. Berkovitz once again had the helper as the Jags took a 2-1 lead.

Not so fast, said Marquette. Just 28 seconds later, Ben Lowe scored to tie the game with assists to Jeszka and Alex Kuhn.

Then, with 1:09 left Tighe scored from the low right side for the game-winner, with an assist to Mike Gilbert.

Wischow came off with about 45 seconds left in favor of an extra Jags attacker, but they were unable to sustain pressure for the tying goal.

Shots were 12-9 in favor of Marquette in the period.

Roznik made 18 saves for Marquette, while Wischow stopped 30 of 33 for the Jaguars.
