Wildcats use three goals in opening period to cruise to victory

The University School co-op girls’ hockey team defeated the Icebergs of Stoughton 4-0 in the final round of the USM Girls Hockey Classic at USM Saturday afternoon.

“We played well all afternoon,” said Jason Woods, USM’s head coach. We made some switches before yesterday’s win and kept them in place today. They were a rousing success. It’s really a matter of belief. The girls now believe in themselves. We’re confident, and it shows in the hockey we’re playing now. They did their jobs and put in a complete game of hockey. We got some good goals early, and that was the difference maker. We fought hard and were rewarded.”

The Wildcats were in command all afternoon, scoring three goals in the first period. The first of USM’s goals was scored just 5:02 into the game. As the Wildcats cycled the puck in the Icebergs’ zone, Caitlin McBride moved it to Nina Andresen on the left boards. Andersen passed it to Laine Tomesch at the near point. Tomesch unleashed a wrist shot that flew past the Icebergs’ goalie Kenzie Torpy to give the Wildcats a quick lead.

USM increased that lead late in the first period. Liz Curley began the play by skating in to the Icebergs’ zone on a near breakaway. After her initial shot, she got the rebound, but a defender knocked the puck away from her stick. It bounced to USM’s Abby Leitschuh in the left circle, and Leitschuh shot it into the net at 13:53.

The momentum was clearly in USM’s favor, and the Wildcats made it 3-0 less than a minute later. Rose Revolinski gained control of the puck in center ice and moved toward the right side as she entered the Icebergs’ zone. Revolinski deftly slid a pass to Andresen who was rushing into the play like an unbridled thoroughbred. Andersen captured the puck, swerved past the goalie, and sent her shot into the net at 14:45.

The final USM goal was scored early in the second period. In the USM zone, Andersen sent the puck to McBride on a breakout play. McBride spotted Revolinski cutting into center ice and forwarded the puck to her. Revolinski raced in on a breakaway. She swept to her right forcing Torpy to commit then lifted the puck into the net at 5:36.

USM continued to play solid defense, and the Wildcats’ focused goalkeeper, Jaime Hathaway, confidently stopped every shot the Icebergs flung at her. As a result, Hathaway gained her first complete game shutout of the year.

USM is now 3-4. After playing three games in three days, the Wildcats have some time off while University School students take exams. The Wildcats resume play at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 22nd when they travel to Fond du Lac for Eastern Shores Conference game against the Fond du Lac co-op Warbirds.
