Siclovan notches second shutout on young season

It is said that a good team builds from the goal forward, and that certainly looks to be the case with the Stevens Point Panthers.

Sophomore Nathan Siclovan earned his second shutout of the season, turning away 22 shots, as SPASH defeated DC Everest 3-0 Thursday night at the Greenheck Fieldhouse in the WiPH Game of the Week.

The eighth-ranked visitors scored early on the big ice, punching in a goal less than two minutes into the contest. Nick Page scored from close in, with assists to Wyatt Dalsbo and Jared Hucke, at the 1:57 mark to give SPASH a 1-0 lead.

DCE had two power play opportunities in the middle of the period, but failed to cash in, as did Point on its one chance.

With less than two minutes left in the period, SPASH did score on an unassisted goal by Matthew Dufresne. The shot was either tipped or bounced off a defender, as the puck sailed over the shoulder of the surprised Everest goalie Michael Moe.

SPASH took the 2-0 lead into the locker room, having outshot the hosts by a tally of 11-8 in the stanza.

The middle period featured lots of back-and-forth play, with neither team gaining an advantage or a score. The Evergreens had two chances to score on the power play and failed, but then ended up with a major penalty late in the period to give the Panthers five minutes of power play time. Nate Bruns got called for a five-minute major on an elbowing penalty at center ice with 1:35 left in the period.

The period ended with the 2-0 score, each team putting nine shots on net in the period.

SPASH struck early in the final period when Jacob Dufresne rammed a loose puck past the sprawled Moe on a power play goal just 23 seconds into the period to make it 3-0 in favor of the guests. Matt Hoyt and Jake Jaworski earned helpers on the play.

The team exchanged power plays in the period, but the game ended with SPASH taking a hard-fought three-goal victory. The Panthers held a slight 6-5 shot advantage in the period.

Siclovan now sports a GAA of less than 1 (0.99) and a save percentage of .956, ranking fourth and third in the state, respectively.

Moe played well in net for DCE (2-3 overall, 1-1 WVC), stopping 23 shots in the contest.

SPASH (6-0, 2-0 WVC) is off until next Friday, when they travel to Ashwaubenon. The Evergreens will travel to conference foe Wisconsin Rapids next Tuesday.
