Senior stops 32 shots as Tigers earn WRC title

New Richmond netminder Baily Lund didn't literally stand on her head, but she did so in a figurative sense, stopping all 32 shots fired on her by the Bay Area Ice Bears Saturday evening in the Wisconsin River Classic game held at the South Wood County Rec Center in Wisconsin Rapids.

The result?

An improbable 1-0 win by New Richmond, avenging a 3-0 whitewash by Bay Area in last year's WRC title game.

Ashley Dusek scored the only goal of the game at the 10:01 mark of the first. After Ice Bears goalie Sarah Block repelled two shots, the puck bounced out to the slot area, where Dusek rifled it back in through traffic to beat the Bay Area netminder.

The Ice Bears held the shot edge each period: 6-5 in the first; an amazing 15-1 in the second; and 11-5 in the third.

Bay Area hit at least four pipes during the game, including two on a power play just seven minutes into the contest.

The end of the first period had the simultaneous sounds of the horn sounding and the puck striking the crossbar as one of the Ice Bears was just an inch or two off on her aim.

Bay Area coach Pat Rafferty pulled Block for an extra attacker with 1:43 left, but Lund turned aside all shots, with help from the tenacious Tigers defense.

Lund's shutout capped a great weekend for the senior, as she stopped 61 of 62 shots for a save percentage of .984 in the two games of tournament play.

Block stopped 10 of 11 shots on her end for the Ice Bears.
