Scary moment as Stars player is taken off on backboard/stretcher

Freshman Hailey Ehr scored twice and senior Sarah Peplinski added a goal and a playmaker as the Point-Rapids Red Panthers clawed past the Fox Cities Stars 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the South Wood County Rec Center.

The consolation game also contained a sobering moment when Stars player Ally Fox got tangled up with a Red Panthers player and went head-first into the boards on the west end of the rink. After the on-site athletic trainer assessed the situation, medical personnel were called and Fox was taken off on a backboard as a precautionary measure. (Further details were not supplied.)

The Stars began the scoring with a power play goal from the slot by Rian Lennon, with assists to Leigh McGuirk and Caiti Jansen just 3:13 into the contest.

Ehr tallied her first varsity goal when she punched in a rebound with just over four minutes left in the period. Rachel Metz and Sarah Peplinski earned helpers on the play.

The period ended deadlocked at one, with the Stars holding a 13-10 shot edge in the stanza.

The second period remained scoreless until the Red Panthers scored twice in a span of 2:11 in the middle part of the period.

Hannah Beilke skated down the left side and ripped a shot from the left dot to score a power play goal, and then Peplinski scored from the low left side to increase the Red Panthers lead to 3-1.

Then, with 2:44 left in the period, the teams were sent to their locker rooms as Ally Fox was receiving medical attention. After the Stars freshman was taken off, the Zamboni cleaned the ice and the teams returned to finish out the period.

No further scoring ensued, and shots were even at seven apiece.

In the third, Ehr scored at the 5:13 mark on a nice move, beating Stars goalie Morgan Talbot high on the blocker side.

Metz finished the scoring with 34 seconds left.

Red Panthers goalie Emily Bubla got the win with her 22 save performance, while Talbot stopped 23 shots on her end.

Two-minute editorial

Hockey is a sport like many others; the players dislike their foes on the field, but are friends off the playing surface.

Witness the reaction by the Bay Area Ice Bears when Fox Cities player Ally Fox crashed head-first into the boards and was carted off on a stretcher.

On a whiteboard in the lobby of the South Wood County Rec Center, here is what was written...

I don't need to say anything else.
