Tigers bust open game with four goals in final period

Emilee Wolf scored three goals and received assists from Alli Wielinski all three times as the New Richmond Tigers beat the Fox Cities Stars 6-1 Saturday afternoon in Wisconsin Rapids.

The second game of the Wisconsin River Classic started with lots of defense and goaltending, but ended with four Tiger goals in the final period.

Wolf scored on a rebound with 35 seconds left in the first period to start the scoring. The Stars held the edge in shots (15-9) but trailed by one on the scoreboard when the period ended.

Ashley Dusek scored from the left dot one minute into the second to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

The Stars cut the lead to 2-1 with Nicole Barfknecht's power play rebound at 7:03. That's how the period ended, but this time New Richmond held the shot edge (16-9).

The third period was all New Richmond, as Wolf scored twice in the first eight and one-half minutes, along with a goal each from Kaylee Bebeau and Dusek.

Shots were nearly even, with the Tigers holding a 7-6 advantage.

Tigers goalie Baily Lund stopped 29 shots in the game, while freshman Morgan Talbot had 26 saves for the Stars.

New Richmond (1-1) moves into the championship game against Bay Area at 6:45pm, while the Stars (1-3) head into the consolation game at 4:30 against host Point-Rapids.
