Taylor Grimm notches first career goal as game-winner

Taylor Grimm picked a perfect time to notch her first high school varsity goal.

Fifty-one minutes and 53 seconds into this contest was the time of the goal. In other words, just under one minute into OT at the South Wood County Rec Center, Grimm slipped the puck past Waupaca goalie Cassie Rasmussen to give the Point-Rapids Red Panthers a hard-fought 6-5 win Monday evening in Great Northern Conference play.

You could tell the skaters came ready to play as the two teams combined for five goals in the first period.

The hosts scored just over three minutes into the tilt when Sarah Peplinski re-directed a shot from the left point off the stick of Amanda Milanowski. Hailey Ehr earned a helper on the play.

Thirty-seven seconds later, talented Tasha Smith scored for Waupaca on a rebound the tie the game at one apiece. Molly Guyer and Chloe Koehn tallied assists on the play.

The Red Panthers would then score twice in a span of just over two minutes, including one score on the man-advantage. Rachel Metz knocked in a rebound with helpers to Rachel Nolan and Rachel McNamara on a 'Friends-like' goal at the 9:00 mark.

Captain Molly Kuckkahn scored from the slot on an assist from Hannah Beilke at 11:13 to make it a 3-1 game in favor of the home squad.

Mandy Tomlinson scored a nice goal as she blazed down the right side and beat Red Panther goalie Taylor Stuettgen high on the glove side from a tough angle to cut the lead to 3-2 at 13:34, and that is how the period ended.

Stuettgen--making her first varsity start--stopped nine shots in the period while Rasmussen had three saves at the other end.

The second period appeared to be docile, scoring-wise, but in the last three plus minutes, the teams combined for three goals as the period ended with a score of '4' on each side of the scoreboard.

Peplinski scored her second goal of the game when she made a nice move on a breakaway and beat the Waupaca goalie low on the stick side to make it 4-2.

Exactly one minute later, Bobbi Sue Sell took the puck and buried it, with assists to former Red Panther Brianne Huettner and Tomlinson.

A half-minute later, the swarming Waupaca team scored again to tie the game on a Tomlinson goal.

Rasmussen stopped eight shots in the period while Stuettgen made 13 saves.

Red Panthers Coach Rachael Graves elected to bring in sophomore goalie Emily Bubla to begin the final period, but that strategy backfired as Tomlinson scored for Waupaca thirty seconds into the period to put the guests ahead by a 5-4 tally.

Just over four minutes later, Beilke scored her first varsity goal to tie the game on a power play, with an assist to Metz--her second of the game.

The teams played another twelve minutes with no score and the game went to overtime. Rasmussen stopped five shots in the period, while Bubla made seven saves for the Red Panthers.

And the rest, as they say, is history as Grimm snapped a shot from the high slot that beat the Waupaca netminder 53 seconds in overtime and the Red Panthers won their first extra-period contest since February 2011, when they beat Medford in a playoff match-up.

Bubla stopped two shots in the overtime and ended with nine saves. Stuettgen stopped 22 of 26 in a nice effort in her debut. Rasmussen made 16 saves for Waupaca.

The Red Panthers will host the Wisconsin River Classic this weekend at the SWC Rec Center, opening with Bay Area, while Waupaca hosts Black River Falls next Monday.
