Injured local skater to play for Warriors

The Wisconsin Warriors sled hockey team is coming to Antigo to take on the host’s Bantam team at 2:00 on Saturday afternoon of Hockey Days in Antigo. Former Antigo Red Robin skater Ezra McPhail who suffered a spinal injury in December and is now rehabbing will play for the Warriors in the game.

Brad Roethlisberger, who most hockey fans know as one of the best referees in the state is the coach of the Warriors. He told Wisconsin Prep Hockey  “the Wisconsin Warrior Sled team was formed 5 years ago and is comprised of disabled athletes all around the state.  Kids range from the ages from 8 to 19.  We look play against able bodied teams and bring our extra equipment, sleds and sticks, for the able bodied kids to play in.”

The team is sponsored by the Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association (WAHA), and they are actively seeking donations to help support the team. Please consider a one time donation of $550 to equip the kids with a sled and sticks. Donations can be sent to WAHA, PO Box 170644, Milwaukee, WI 53217 made payable to WAHA Sled Hockey.

Roethlisberger says “all together, we have about 12 kids on our roster when everyone can show up.  Part of the reason we play games around the state is to increase awareness about the sport and hopefully give disabled athletes another avenue for them. No experience is necessary to play and in fact we only have one skater with previous hockey experience.”

Wisconsin Prep Hockey will follow up with pictures and more from the game on Saturday.
