Top Ten: Notre Dame and Onalaska hold on to the top spots but we've got some new blood in the Top Ten.

Both No. 1's took their first losses of the season this past week, but they both held on to their spot in the rankings as well.

Top Ranked Notre Dame Academy beat Appleton United and Superior at the Duluth Hilltopper holiday tournament before losing to Duluth Marshall in the championship game, but it didn't affect the Tritons spot in the rankings, as they spent another week as the unanimous No. 1 selection.

For the girls, Onalaska suffered the No. 1 curse that has plagued all of the top ranked girls teams in Wisconsin this year as they suffered two losses at their tournament in Minnesota.  The voters however didn't punish them, as they are still undefeated in Wisconsin.

Rice Lake and Waukesha jumped into the top then this week on the boys side, both from the list of 'unranked' teams last week. It isn't often teams can skip right over honorable mention and get into the top ten but both did.

Boys - Top Ten

No. 1

Schedule

The Tritons continue to roll along with big wins over Fond du Lac and Appleton United this week.  Superior announced they are back against the Tritons in the semi-finals of the Duluth Hilltopper tournament, but Notre Dame fended them off and captured the 3-2 win.

They couldn't keep it going against Duluth Marshall though, and took their first loss of the season. 39 seconds into the second period, the Tritons scored their second goal and took a 2-0 lead on Marshall, but Marshall stormed back for 5 unanswered goals to take a 5-2 lead.  Notre Dame picked up a goal with just under four minutes remaining in the game, but couldn't secure a victory.

No. 2

Schedule

Bergler called Verona "relentlessly fast" on our podcast this week and it certainly showed as their outscored their opponents 21-3 in three games at the Evergreens Holiday Tournament.

Sun Prairie and Madison Edgewood should both provide Verona with a test this week though.

No. 3

Schedule

The refrain we heard from coaches and spectators at the Duluth Hilltopper Tournament this year was "Superior Is Back."  Voters didn't know what to do with Superior earlier in the year but it seems they've found their place locked in the top five at this point.

They beat a good Madison Edgewood team before falling to top ranked Notre Dame in a great game.  They picked up third in the tournament by beating Mankato West.  Their only game this week is against Proctor.

No. 4

Schedule

West took the week off and will pick up two conference games this week as they take on a reinvigorated Marshfield squad, before their second game against DC Everest for supremacy in the Wisconsin Valley Conference.

No. 5

Schedule

ECM made their usual trek down to Rochester for that holiday tournament, and like last year they found themselves in the championship game.  Last year they fell to New Ulm in that game, but this year they skated to a 0-0 tie with Rochester Century. Century won in a shootout, but the game counts as a tie.

They will have to face Rice Lake on Thursday with the lead of the Big Rivers Conference on the line.  Rice Lake and ECM both own 4-0 conference records.

No. 6

Schedule

Everest was looking to climb up in the top ten rankings, with their convincing wins over FDL Springs and Tomahawk, but they ran into a steamroller in the championship game of the Evergreens Holiday Tournament when they met Verona.

Everest will take on Stevens Point, Wausau West and a sneaky good Whitefish Bay team this week.  They'll have their work cut out for them if they want to hold their ranking.

No. 7

Schedule

Marquette found their way back into the top ten after dropping down to honorable mention.  Their road back in was through their opponents in the Admirals Cup, whom they handled admirably.

They will take on Sun Prairie and Madison West this week, with West fresh off their victory in the Culver Cup in Madison.

No. 8

Schedule

University School opened the week strong with a victory over Waterloo, but followed with a loss to Janesville.  Its been an up and down sort of year for USM, and the finished their with with in the up position with a win over Mount Carmel.

They've only got one game this week, against Monona Grove.

No. 9

Schedule

Rice Lake makes their first trip to the top ten in a long time this week with wins over Stoughton and Amery.  The Warriors opened their season with a 5-4 overtime loss to Superior.  That game was seen as a mark against Superior in the minds of top ten voters for several weeks, but nine games later the Warriors are 9-1 overall and are fighting for first place in the Big Rivers Conference with Eau Claire Memorial, who hasn't seen a serious challenger in some time.

No. 10

Schedule

How did the Waukesha Wings get into the top ten?  Well it doesn't hurt to have the state's second leading scorer in sophomore Zed Dietrich, or the state's top goalie in save percentage (2nd in GAA) sophomore Jake Kupsky.

This two man punch on the front and back ends of the ice have make the Wings a formidable opponent.

Schedule

No. 1

Onalaska took their first two losses of the season in their Holiday Tournament in Minnesota last week.  They will look to avenge those losses against the Stoughton Co-Op and Badger Thunder this week, and hold on to their undefeated record in Wisconsin.

Schedule

No. 2

It was a week off for Hayward/Spooner but they'll get back into the action this week in the frozen north with games against New Richmond and Superior.

Schedule

No. 3

Like many of the top girls teams, St. Croix Valley spent the week in Minnesota, where they did well overall, with wins over two strong Minnesota clubs and a loss to a tough North Dakota opponent.  They'll keep the Minnesota action going this week against Rochester Lourdes, before taking on Hudson.

Schedule

No. 4

The Storm went 1-2 on the week against their Minnesota opponents but they come back home this week for a game against Marshfield.

In last year's sectional final the Storm got all they could handle from Marshfield defender Paige Johsnon. They'll have their work cut out for them this week as well.

Schedule

No. 5

The Stars had a rough couple weeks after earning the No. 1 ranking before giving way to Hayward/Spooner, but they've righted the ship and picked up two wins this week, before skating to a tie against fellow top ten team Bay Area.

It'll be a tough game this week as they take on a very strong Chippewa Falls team, whose only in-state loss is to Onalaska.

Schedule

No. 6

For some reason the Cardinals fell in the rankings this week, as the voters aren't entirely sold on them yet.  The team has only one in-state loss (Onalaska), and had a good run over the holiday week.

A win over the ECA Stars this week could solidify the Cardinals as a top five team, of course that is easier said than done.

Schedule

No. 7

It was a great week for the Wildcats this week with three wins, but there is a log jam in the girls top ten preventing them from moving up more than one spot this week.

They'll face two top ten teams this week and an honorable mention.  If they want to jump up in the rankings, this is the week to do it.

Schedule

No. 8

The Glaciers jumped up two spots this week on the back of three wins. The team's top line of Arianna Smith, Morgan Hollowell and Jamie Ertl might actually be unstoppable.

The Glaciers are currently tied for first in the Eastern Shores conference with 8 points with USM. Their game against Fondy-Waupun will be very important this week if they want to keep pace with the Wildcats.

Schedule

No. 9

No team has done more moving up and down the top ten than last year's section 4 champion Sun Prairie Co-op. It was down again this week from 7th to 9th with losses to Chippewa Falls and Henry Sibley.

It doesn't get any easier this week as they open against the USM Wildcats and then move on to face the Metro Lynx.

Schedule

No. 10

If Sun Prairie has done the most moving within the top ten, it is Bay Area that has done the most moving in and out of the top ten to honorable mention.  They are back in the top ten this week on the virtue of wins over Fondy-Waupun and Rock County before skating to a tie with the ECA Stars.

Like Sun Prairie, Bay Area's road to a higher spot in the top ten this week goes through University School, before taking on the Metro Lynx.
