Top Ten: Hayward/Spooner Pulls Off the First No. 1 Repeat Week for the Girls

It was an interesting week for the Top Ten on both sides this week as teams shuffled around and jockeyed for position in the early part of the season.

The two biggest movers this week were Marquette for the boys and Onalaska for the girls.  Marquette dropped from 3rd to 10th this week after taking a couple of tough one-goal losses.

Onalaska on the other hand jumped from 7th to 2nd in the girls rankings and they remain unbeaten on the season.

Other big movers this week for the boys were Homestead and Verona.  For the girls Kettle Moraine jumped into the Top Ten for the first time.

Boys - Top Ten

No. 1

Schedule

Notre Dame made quick work of Bay Port and Stoughton to be one of the few remaining unbeaten teams in the state.

They'll have their work cut out for them this week against Madison Edgewood who have been perfect since their opening-game loss to Reedsburg/Wisconsin Dells.

No. 2

Schedule

Speaking of unbeaten teams, the DC Everest Evergreens had a scare against the Marshfield Tigers, thanks to three powerplay goals by the Tigers including one in the last minute to send the game to overtime.

The Evergreens scored 11 seconds into the overtime frame to win the game.  They'll play in the Marathon cup this week against 6th ranked Wausau West and depending on the result they'll take on the winner or loser of Mosinee and Wausau East.

No. 3

Schedule

Yet another unbeaten team, the Wildcats have outscored their opponents 50-7 on the young season to jump out to a quick 6-0 record.

They'll look to keep up the torment this week as they take on Madison Memorial.

No. 4

Schedule

First Homestead took Notre Dame to overtime to open everybody's eyes, then they knock of the prevoius No. 3 team in Marquette to jump all the way up to fourth.

Homestead's three-game stretch of one-goal games with Green Bay United, Notre Dame and Marquette was one of the more impressive of the season and clearly got the voter's attention.

No. 5

Schedule

Its interesting that Green Bay United slots in behind Homestead as they beat them earlier in the season, and the Gryphon's only loss was to second ranked DC Everest.

The Gryphons will look to make some headway in conference play this week with games against Ashwaubenon, De Pere and Shawano.

No. 6

Schedule

The Warriors are another team confounding the voters this week.  The 6th ranked Warriors sit ahead of Marquette and University School, both of whom have beaten Wausau this season.  With so many players returning from last season's state championship team, the voters expect the Warriors to win some games.

Wausau takes part in the annual Marathon cup this week with a game against DC Everest, and depending on the result the winner or loser of Mosinee and Wausau East.

No. 7

Schedule

Superior had a nice week with wins over Menomonie and New Richmond.

They'll open their Lake Superior Conference schedule on Tuesday against Hermantown, before hosting Wisconsin Rapids on Saturday.

No. 8

Schedule

The Old Abes only had one game this week, which they won, but they still dropped four slots in the rankings.  Its getting tough out there.

Eau Claire has two tilts this week, with Hayward and Menomonie.

No. 9

Schedule

University School closed out their fall academic semester in style with wins over Arrowhead and rival Brookfield.

The U School is off next week as the students take finals.

No. 10

Schedule

It was the rough week for the Hilltoppers, dropping from third to 10th overall. They opened with a 4-3 loss to KMM before taking a 3-2 loss to the surging squad from Homestead.

They finished the week out with a 1-0 win over Arrowhead.  Like the U School, Marquette is off this week for final exams.

Schedule

No. 1

A win over Medford kept the Hurricanes in the top spot this week, making them the first of the three girls teams to hold the top spot to repeat for a second week.

They'll have to work to keep it against honorable mention squad Chippewa Falls before taking on Silver Bay.

Schedule

No. 2

The Hilltoppers appear to be an unstoppable train so far on the young season.  They have seven straight wins so open the season, including top team team Kettle Moraine and Eau Claire-Altoona (who was No. 1 at the time).

This week it'll be Black River Falls turn to try and stop Onalaska's train.

Schedule

No. 3

Eau Claire-Altoona opened the season with four straight wins, including against Top Ten teams Central Wisconsin, University School and Northland Pines.  They've lost their last two against Hayward/Spooner and Onalaska, the only teams currently ranked ahead of the Stars.

This week features a rematch with Central Wisconsin.

Schedule

No. 4

The Fusion is making a swing through Minnesota before coming back for some in-state games.  Last week they picked up a split with St. Paul and Red Wing.  This week they'll open with North St. Paul before getting back into Wisconsin.

The Sun Prairie Co-Op and Fondy-Waupun will make for good games as St. Croix gets back into their Wisconsin schedule.

Schedule

No. 5

The Storm picked up convincing wins over Tomahawk and Fondy-Waupun this week, both with impressive offensive outbursts.

They'll take on Eau Claire-Altoona this week looking for revenge as it was the Stars that knocked the Storm out of the No. 1 spot in the rankings.

Schedule

No. 6

Sun Prairie picked up a win in their only action last week, as they knocked off the Badger Thunder 6-1.

They'll certainly be busier this week with games against Beaver Dam/Randolf, St. Croix Valley, and the Stoughton Co-op.

Schedule

No. 7

Northland Pines is one of the best stories on the season going toe-to-toe with some of the massive co-ops from around the state.

Last week they knocked off another small school Lakeland 7-0.  This week they take on Medford.

Schedule

No. 8

Kettle Moraine made a giant leap into the rankings this week (boys too at Honorable Mention), with wins over Arrowhead, Rock County and the Stoughton Co-op.  They also lost to University School.

This week sees them take on Fondy-Waupun, Beaver Dam-Randolf and the Badger Thunder.

Schedule

No. 9

Bay Area continues to hang around the lower half of the top ten with a win over Fox Cities.

This week they take on Appleton United and the Northern Edge.  Watch out for Anna Westmark of Appleton United as she goes for her 100th prep goal against Bay Area.

Schedule

No. 10

Just like with college football, sometimes the rankings don't make a lot of sense.  Kettle Moraine jumped into the Top Ten this week despite a loss to USM, and they are ranked ahead of USM.

For their part the Wildcats also beat the Stoughton Co-op and Rock County Co-op this week to take the 10th spot.  Like the boys team, the girls squad is off this week for final exams.
